Our seasonal walk with Simon takes us through the heart of the Old City to conjure up a cornucopia of Christmas cheer….
With Dickens as our guide, we will delve into the dark origins of his novel, A Christmas Carol, which became a bestseller within just a few days of its publication and which established many Christmas traditions we take for granted today.
We’ll rub our hands and stamp our feet down hidden alleyways and gloomy courtyards as we discover where Ebenezer Scrooge lived and worked, and the hill that Bob Cratchit slid down twenty times in honour of it being Christmas Eve!
We’ll then visit the spectacular Victorian market where the ‘prize turkey’ was sold and where the magnificent Lord Mayor’s Christmas Tree stands today.
Along the way, Simon will summon up the spirit of Christmas past, present & future, with readings from the novel in the locations where the action takes place.
We will explore some weird and wonderful Victorian Christmas traditions and even sample Dickens’ favourite Christmas tipple… (which Simon will mix at home and bring with him!).
